Urulakizhangu Mezhukkupuratti (Kerala Style Potato Stir Fry)

This Kerala style potato stir fry or Urulakizhangu Mezhukkupuratti is something I make when I put off grocery shopping for so long that there is hardly anything left to cook with at home except a few old potatoes. But this meal of rice and potato stir fry is so satisfying that I wonder why I don’t make it more often. Yes, I do load my plate with food when I make this stir fry. It’s not recommended for people on a diet, but the extra inches are totally worth it!

Potato and Corn Masala Curry

This Potato & Corn masala curry is something I cooked during Lent this year and have been cooking very frequently since. You can say this is a Kerala style curry because it uses all the spices a regular Kerala curry uses, but the addition of corn makes it different. It is fairly easy to put together and goes well with rice, bread and rotis.

Kerala Style Fish Cutlet

Kerala is a fish loving community and we have created an incredible variety of dishes featuring fish. Of all these dishes, fish cutlet is by far my favorite. To make cutlets, firm fleshed fish such as tuna or mackerel is cooked along with spices, onion and herbs. The bones are then removed, and the

Kerala Egg Curry

This Easter, I broke tradition and made this Kerala style nadan egg curry instead of my usual chicken stew. As with many Kerala specialties, this subtly spiced curry uses coconut oil and has the creamy deliciousness of coconut milk which makes it a perfect accompaniment to appam, idiyappam and other

Potato Chops (Vegetarian)

If I stand outside a married couple’s window, I might get lucky. OK, that made me sound like Palakan, the peeping tom in my village who struck fear and disgust in the hearts of many young women, and who also served as a boxing bag to many young men. But I don’t belong to the same genre as him, I assure you. Having nursed a burning desire for a high end phone for sometime now, I am simply hoping to catch an iPhone that a frustrated wife throws out because she feels the phone gets more attention than she does.
Do you think I am exaggerating? Listen to some excerpts from conversations with friends:
“Truly, I tell you. Technology is the enemy of marriage.” (Seriously, a friend said this!)
“I gave him an ultimatum. Either me or the phone. Guess what he chose.”
“WhatsApp kandu pidichavanne kitiyaal, avante thala manda adichu pottikaam.” (I’ll break the skull of whoever founded Whatsapp.)
“I decided to give him the silent treatment. And you know what, he didn’t even notice.”
His idea of ba

Fish Balls in Soy SauceYum

It was a glorious day. The morning mist had cleared and the sun shone brightly through the thick trees making the placid lake shimmer. Birds twittered melodiously, fawn skipped around and rabbits sniffed the scent laden air. The world was perfect just as god had intended it to be.
Inspite of being the ultimate masterpiece of god’s magnificent creation, Eve wasn’t happy. She studied her reflection closely in the lake and worried that some of her beauty was gone. Her face had lost its radiance and she spied some fine lines and wrinkles near her eyes, brown spots on her cheeks and even some sticky chip chip. Her hair had five problems and no solution. Her skin tone was uneven with her exposed parts a nutty brown and the rest of it a creamy golden. Eve liked uneven colors only on a zebra. Her underarms were dark and her cheeks burnt with embarrassment at the thought that Adam might have noticed them when she raised her hands to get an apple on a high branch the other day. She would have l

Kerala Style Chicken Curry with Thick Gravy

Nadan chicken curry from Kerala with thick and creamy coconut milk gravy. My family has an aversion to meat dishes that have too much gravy. They associate the extra gravy or sauce with “too much masala, spices and oil”, like the curries that are served at some marriage functions and in certain res

Summer vacation is about to end and Qya has successfully managed to empty his brain of the “A,B,C’s”, “1,2,3’s” and everything else he learnt in the past year. With Ben 10, followed by Tom Jerry, followed by Oggy and the Cockroaches, followed by numerous other aliens and creepy crawlies that walk and talk and jump and do the unimaginable, who had time for something as mundane as “A B C”? To save my home from being blown up, I sent him to “summer camp” during the vacation. I am not entirely sure what Qya did there, but seeing that he was very happy about it, I believe he was unleashed on the school grounds with his friends and allowed to perform gymnastics and somersaults, and perhaps allowed to fly around in an iron man suit (since that’s what he tries to do at home). In all fairness, the summer vacation was also a period of learning and discovery – of a different kind – which were the best hiding places in the house? How hard could you throw a ball at the window without actually brea

Kerala Style Beef Cutlets or Croquettes

Ah, I love the last few days of the year. This is the time when I touch the pinnacle of all bad habits that I possess hoping that I can discard them forever with the start of the new year. Maxing out my expenditures, loading my plate with as much fries as possible, replacing water with coke and neglecting the gym religiously top my priorities now because come 2013, I shall be turning over into a healthy and beautiful new leaf. I will be planning my finances, learning time management and implementing a few new diet and fitness regimes. Yes, yes, I make these resolutions every year, but this year is going to be different. I can simply feel it, can’t you? So, if you spot me with as much as a crisp in hand (weekends excluded), I shall buy you a pizza (a large one with double the cheese and toppings). I am hoping my over indulgence today, the last day of the year will carry me through the new year. But if I do go back to my old habits, you will share that pizza with me, won’t you?

Vada Pav

We observed one more Bharat Bandh to protest the latest rise in diesel prices yesterday. Though the entire country came to a standstill, I had a very busy day at home. In between Finding Nemo on Star Movies and Arjunan Sakshi on Surya TV (seen both movies several times but simply couldn’t resist the charm of Nemo and Prithviraj), a game of football with Qya on the terrace(!) and some hot gossip with my mom, I somehow managed to make vada pav for the family, especially for Qya who has taken a liking for the ‘bada’ he eats at school. Sadly, though not entirely unexpected, he refused to even taste the bada I made claiming that his teacher made them in a different shape. But he loved the buttery pavs and declared the dry garlic chutney to be delicious even as his eyes watered as its fiery flavours registered.
Vada Pav is a popular fast food from Maharastra that consists of a deep fried potato vada or fritter sandwiched between small, buttery, square bread slices or pav. The sandwich is o
