Chettinad Chicken Fry

If you are craving a hot and spicy dish with the pungent aroma of freshly ground spices, then this Chettinad Chicken Fry is for you. It is a typical stir fry from the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu, and like all Chettinad dishes, it will hit the all right spots, especially the spicy ones.

Murgh Saagwala – Spinach Chicken Curry

Murgh Saagwala is essentially chicken (murgh) cooked in pureed spinach (saag). It’s a mild curry that I quite like and I so badly wanted to cook it recently that I braved the c-c-cold Bangalore weather in search of spinach. By the time I got the leaves in the fifth shop I went to, I could barely fe

Chicken Samosa

Samosas have a habit of running out just before I get hold of one. I went to this samosa stall near a mosque recently, hoping to lay my hands on the famed chicken samosas. But I was late by a few minutes and they had run out. As if to add insult to injury, the young stall keeper offered me vegetaria

Chicken and Capsicum Curry

This is the non vegetarian version of my capsicum curry that was quite a hit with everyone who tried it. Adding chicken to the recipe has made it even better (obviously)! It is very much like the North Indian curries you would enjoy in your favourite Indian restaurant. The curry pairs well with whit

Mini Pavlova

This was obviously a recipe meant for Valentine’s Day. But then I decided that love should be celebrated all through the year and I should post this a few days late just to remind everyone of the promises made on V Day. I assure you, my being late had nothing to do with being inexplicably lazy.
Whether you are in love or not, this is one dessert that you’ll enjoy. Mini heart shaped pavlova drizzled with melted dark chocolate and filled with whipped cream, cherry pie filling and chocolate sauce; what’s not to like?

Homemade Pita Bread, Tahini and Pickles

I spent almost half my lifetime in Oman but my experience with Arabic food is very limited. Hardly surprising, because Salalah, the town I lived in was more or less like Kerala. It was surprisingly green for a desert, got the occasional rainfall that the Arabs loved to watch and most importantly, th

Fish Balls

Summer vacation is about to end and Qya has successfully managed to empty his brain of the “A,B,C’s”, “1,2,3’s” and everything else he learnt in the past year. With Ben 10, followed by Tom Jerry, followed by Oggy and the Cockroaches, followed by numerous other aliens and creepy crawlies that walk and talk and jump and do the unimaginable, who had time for something as mundane as “A B C”? To save my home from being blown up, I sent him to “summer camp” during the vacation. I am not entirely sure what Qya did there, but seeing that he was very happy about it, I believe he was unleashed on the school grounds with his friends and allowed to perform gymnastics and somersaults, and perhaps allowed to fly around in an iron man suit (since that’s what he tries to do at home). In all fairness, the summer vacation was also a period of learning and discovery – of a different kind – which were the best hiding places in the house? How hard could you throw a ball at the window without actually brea

Tandoori Chicken with Coriander Dip

Hats off to Kundan Lal Gujral who decided to experiment with the food he served in his restaurant in pre independence Peshawer. He ended up cooking chicken in a hot tandoor or clay oven which was normally used to make bread at the time. (Now that is the kind of “innovation”, “pro-activeness” and “ou

Vermicelli Uppuma

After Prithviraj’s good looks, KK’s soulful voice and bottles of Nutella, the Work from Home concept may be the best gift ever given to womankind. Imagine being at home, humming a merry tune and watering your plants as your friends huff and puff to get to their bus stop. A hot cup of fresh tea made just to your liking and the day’s newspaper on your balcony while the others wrinkle their nose at the overly sweet cardamom tea that a mindless machine makes. A clearer mind while you work because you didn’t have to get up at an ungodly hour to prepare the day’s meals and pack them. Instead, you would be doing the cutting, chopping, sauteing and roasting as you attend your calls or wait for the program run to be over. The breaks are not spent in the pantry but reading a book to the little one. The little one, who incidentally doesn’t suffer from nappy rashes anymore because you get to change his diapers on time, unlike the nanny you entrusted him to. The world is at peace and while you may

Kozhi Nirachathu – Kerala Style Stuffed Chicken

I have met many people (non Keralites, mostly) who on learning that I am Christian ask me if I booze regularly, live on a diet of chicken, rabbit and other fluffy creatures (something I wouldn’t mind practicing), and express unbridled surprise that I am not dressed in a frilly frock. The Goan charac
