Potato and Corn Masala Curry

This Potato & Corn masala curry is something I cooked during Lent this year and have been cooking very frequently since. You can say this is a Kerala style curry because it uses all the spices a regular Kerala curry uses, but the addition of corn makes it different. It is fairly easy to put together and goes well with rice, bread and rotis.

Calicut Chicken Curry

While I love pasta and pizza, this Calicut chicken curry with rice and a salad on the side is the kind of food I love to eat after a hard day at work. Unlike other chicken curries from Kerala, the only masala this curry uses is red chili powder and coriander powder. And the flavour that comes from

Parippu Vada – Lentil Fritters, A Savory Snack from Kerala Yum

Have you ever wondered about the kind of relationship you will share with your spouse a few years down the line, when you are old? After many years of togetherness, will there be anything left to talk about, or will a perpetual silence prevail to be occasionally broken by visiting children and grand children? Will outings be as much fun as they are now, or will you be too tired and grumpy to move out of your reclining chairs? In my family, uncles and aunts seem to be enjoying retired life in luxurious homes with their pets and gardens, large flat screen plasma TVs for the latest movies and all the “mega” serials, comfortable cars to take them to marriages and engagement ceremonies, exhibitions and sales. I just can’t wait to get retired! A part of my maternal uncle’s daily routine is a game of cards in the evening at the “Elder’s Club”. Though the name suggests a unisex club, women are a big no-no here (they surely don’t want anyone telling them off when their gossip goes over the limi

Chicken Dopiaza

If you think you have stored all your valuables in the safe, think again. Aren’t those onions lying around unprotected in an easy to find, totally predictable spot in your kitchen? If yes, then you haven’t yet heard about the armed robbers targeting trucks carrying tons of onions after prices shot up due to the unrelenting monsoons this year. While they may not target aam aadmi like you and me who cannot afford to buy more than a kg or so of onions at a time, the small time crooks – the Munnabhais and Ganpatts of your locality may target your meager purchase. Either that, or you may fall prey to your neighbour who has her eye in your onion basket and keeps borrowing a couple.
With the importance that onions have in Indian cuisine, they have the power to move not only the common man but also the government to tears. Keep a lookout for politicians giving out onions in exchange for votes because they are aware that a price hike such as this one could very well topple the government. Nev

Fish Balls

Summer vacation is about to end and Qya has successfully managed to empty his brain of the “A,B,C’s”, “1,2,3’s” and everything else he learnt in the past year. With Ben 10, followed by Tom Jerry, followed by Oggy and the Cockroaches, followed by numerous other aliens and creepy crawlies that walk and talk and jump and do the unimaginable, who had time for something as mundane as “A B C”? To save my home from being blown up, I sent him to “summer camp” during the vacation. I am not entirely sure what Qya did there, but seeing that he was very happy about it, I believe he was unleashed on the school grounds with his friends and allowed to perform gymnastics and somersaults, and perhaps allowed to fly around in an iron man suit (since that’s what he tries to do at home). In all fairness, the summer vacation was also a period of learning and discovery – of a different kind – which were the best hiding places in the house? How hard could you throw a ball at the window without actually brea

Mirchi/Chili Bajji for the Monsoon Season

It has been raining not cats and dogs, but tigers and ware wolves in my part of the world. I was staring at my laptop, trying to figure out exactly what I needed to and didn’t need to put in a technical document I was supposed to be preparing. Confused that I was, and having missed my evening tea, I felt a little cranky (as I always do by evening) and it took me some time to realize that the bangs I was hearing were those of thunder, and not of some AR Rahman fan playing “Jai Ho!” outside. (I didn’t like that song very much, by the way, did you?) Rain! This was a sure indication from god that a break was in order; so I decided to brave the mini storm and ventured out hoping to catch hold of the lady who serves hot chili bajjis outside my office. As I stood munching on the bajjis (which were quite nice), I saw a group of kids splashing and squealing in the water, and it reminded me of my son saying “Jumping in the water, splish splash splosh!” every time he managed to get rid of my han
