Rich Chicken Curry – North Indian Style

Scroll down for the recipe for North Indian style Chicken curry with spice and cashewnut paste. Every parent who has googled “Good Parenting” knows that comparing your child with your neighbor’s greener grass, sorry, brighter kid is a big no, no. “Criminal Minds” tells you that unfavorable comparisons will give them an inferiority complex and they will end up as serial killers, favorable comparisons will give them a god complex, and make them, you guessed it, serial killers. Not to worry, this is not true in all cases. My parents told me exactly why the the boy who cracked the…

North Indian Chicken Curry

Like every year, I indulged in a one week non vegetarian safari before Lent started. And this year, this delicious Chicken Curry was the highlight. This is a curry flavorful enough to sustain you through fifty days of vegetarianism without having to resort to a forbidden taste every now and then, a

Palada Pradaman

Is the onakodi for your family ready? Have you finalized your Onasadhya menu yet? Have you finished buying your vegetables, marked out the banana leaves that are going to be your organic plates for tomorrow or found out which shops sell banana leaves in case you are a pravasi malayali? Need I remind you that a sadhya is a sadhya only if you are able to produce atleast 20 vibhavangal to crowd those banana leaves? Needless to say, I am all excited that it is Onam tomorrow. For me, apart from draping my kasavu sari and decorating my hair with jasmine flowers, Onam is that one day of the year when vegetarian food shines in all its glory, each urulla of rice resulting in an explosion of flavours that are sweet, sour, spicy and tangy. My favourite part of the meal remains the payasam or sweet pudding. Kerala boasts of a wide variety of payasams such as adapradhaman, chakkapradhaman, paal payasam, ari payasam, semiya pasayam, payar payasam etc. Some are sweetened with jaggery and are dark in

Shahi Paneer

It’s been a long time since I blogged, and I would like to thank my millions of considerate readers for not bothering me with emails and comments inquiring about my well being, though I am sure you were worried to tiny bits. Inspite of the long break, I have to start my post on a bitter note. All b

Chicken Dopiaza

If you think you have stored all your valuables in the safe, think again. Aren’t those onions lying around unprotected in an easy to find, totally predictable spot in your kitchen? If yes, then you haven’t yet heard about the armed robbers targeting trucks carrying tons of onions after prices shot up due to the unrelenting monsoons this year. While they may not target aam aadmi like you and me who cannot afford to buy more than a kg or so of onions at a time, the small time crooks – the Munnabhais and Ganpatts of your locality may target your meager purchase. Either that, or you may fall prey to your neighbour who has her eye in your onion basket and keeps borrowing a couple.
With the importance that onions have in Indian cuisine, they have the power to move not only the common man but also the government to tears. Keep a lookout for politicians giving out onions in exchange for votes because they are aware that a price hike such as this one could very well topple the government. Nev

Butter Chicken – Murgh Makhani

An ideal world would be one in which all promises are kept, no rules are broken and people truly love and respect each other.
But such a world exists only in Karan Johar movies where the men are more gorgeous than Chris Hemsworth, the women’s legs are longer than the whole of me and they show all of it, and where love happens in London, Paris or San Fracisco with firangis dancing in the background wearing lehengas designed by Manish Malhotra.
It’s all rosy in Mills Boon novels too, where after 100 pages of keeping passions and emotions in check and denying each other’s existence, the lovebirds finally unleash it all and live happily ever after.
The world is a beautiful place in my fantasies too. In it, I am 10 kgs lesser than my actual weight.
But reality is a far cry from all the mush and the slush. In our world, we have politicians who promise to erase poverty, but instead erase the poor. From their view point, it isn’t a grave injustice. They promised to hatao the girib-i and inst

Ney Choru – Aromtic Ghee Rice from Kerala

We Indians are big on entertaining at home, with the motto Adithi Daivobhava (Guest is God) held close to our generous hearts. Once the guests are invited and a time and date is fixed to suit everyone’s convenience (the time being just a formality, since guests are expected to arrive atleast an hou

I am brain dead. My brain had been trying to assimilate Malayalam serials for the past few months, and it finally gave up. Blew a fuse, pulled the plug, hit the bucket, just like that. How does serial watching affect your mental health?? Malayalam soaps subject the brain to extremes. The onscreen w

Stuffed Plantains

“A twist on ghee fried plantains? Really? That would so not work. Ridiculous!”. These were my first thoughts when I glanced at the pictures of “Stuffed Plantains” in Vanitha. My skepticism was fully justified because fried plantains was a classic that required minimum effort and nobody in their right minds would try and improve on a classic. I actually felt a teeny weeny bit insulted by the recipe. So, I decided to try it out just so I could prove my point, you know? But incredibly, astonishingly I was proved wrong! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I must admit (grudgingly so) that the “Stuffed Plantain” is in fact a couple of notches better than our good old Fried Plantain.
This is quite a simple recipe to put together. You just warm up freshly grated coconut along with raisins and nuts and sprinkle in some sugar and spices. This would be our filling. Spread out the filling over plantain slices fried in ghee. Roll them up and secure with tooth picks.
