Tofu and Capsicum Curry

My son loves paneer and demands paneer curry (or pizza, if he is feeling lucky) almost every weekend. In an attempt to make a healthy curry, I substituted paneer with tofu and paired it with whole wheat Kerala porotta instead of plain flour ones. He heard me blabber about the substitutions and pulle

Chicken Fried Rice

Its old news now, but I hope you remember Barack Obama’s remarks about religious intolerance in India towards the end of his historic visit to the county. The next time he makes one of those visits, I request the CIA or whoever decides the president’s itinerary to let him drive through the busy st

Chicken and Capsicum Curry

This is the non vegetarian version of my capsicum curry that was quite a hit with everyone who tried it. Adding chicken to the recipe has made it even better (obviously)! It is very much like the North Indian curries you would enjoy in your favourite Indian restaurant. The curry pairs well with whit

Chili Chicken

Some people hardly eat anything at all. You know the kind that carefully scrapes the cream off pastries before they take a nibble. On the rare occasion that they can be coaxed into eating a puri, they blanket the fried bread in tissue paper and wring them tightly to remove excess oil. You wouldn’t take them to a buffet meal because they don’t eat your money’s worth of food and this compels you to down twice your usual quota, in the pretext of making up for the grave injustice they have done to the chef’s efforts. They even claim that ice creams give them a headache!
My mother, my very own mother, is one of those people who eat to live and not vice versa. So much is the difference between our food habits that I sometimes think there may be some merit to my brother’s claim that I was picked off some grubby street when I was a baby. She is as far removed from gluttony as Salman is from his shirt. But is it, I mean, is my mom’s eating habits (and not Salman’s shirt or the lack of it) some

Surviving with a Cricket Fan(atic) and a Recipe for Pan Fried Pizza

My husband warned me recently that he would need to be in control of the TV remote for a few days! He wanted to watch the Cricket World cup, it seems. This did not come as too much of a shock to me, because in a country where cricket is more of a religion than a sport, it is but natural to find fanatics everywhere. And with the ongoing World Cup, there is an increase in cricketing activity everywhere. There are so many kids (even more than usual) on the roads and streets playing the game with paper or tennis balls, small boards and writing files instead of proper bats, and wickets made of anything that can stand upright. You are more likely to find your colleague in front of the canteen TV than at his workstation and everyone wants to talk about the players and particularly exciting matches (not necessarily played in recent history). No ball, run or fielding action is spared a detailed post mortem. And isn’t it commendable how every product on the market can be linked to cricket/cric

Crave Chinese? Try Saucy Chinese Paneer !!!

I have heard that authentic Chinese food tastes quite different from what we get from Chinese restaurants in India. But I am not about to complain, because I love Indo-Chinese cuisine. And last week, a craving for Chinese food hit me, but since no one wanted to go out, I decided to try something at
