Hot and Sticky Honey Sriracha Chicken Wings

Crispy baked chicken wings tossed in a hot and sweet honey, sriracha sauce with ginger, garlic and cumin. I have taken another long break from blogging. But for once, it was not because I was lazy, but because I was super busy, with work…and baking as well. Crl’s son’s school was hosting a Diwali

Tofu and Capsicum Curry

My son loves paneer and demands paneer curry (or pizza, if he is feeling lucky) almost every weekend. In an attempt to make a healthy curry, I substituted paneer with tofu and paired it with whole wheat Kerala porotta instead of plain flour ones. He heard me blabber about the substitutions and pulle

Chicken and Capsicum Curry

This is the non vegetarian version of my capsicum curry that was quite a hit with everyone who tried it. Adding chicken to the recipe has made it even better (obviously)! It is very much like the North Indian curries you would enjoy in your favourite Indian restaurant. The curry pairs well with whit

Capsicum Curry

I spend my lunch time in office with a gang of girls gossiping, sampling each others’ lunch, cribbing about weight gain and swapping recipes. Because everyone else is a vegetarian and non keralite, I get to taste a lot of things that I am not familiar with, such as Akki Roti, Bisi Bele Bath, Vaangi

Schezwan Sauce

I saw some videos of the Kiss of Love and my first thought was that these people needed to refine their technique somehow. The kisses looked nothing like the Hollywood kinds that make you weak in the knees. They weren’t even as tasteful as an Emraan Hashmi kissing episode. Instead they made you avert your eyes till the voice of the news reader assured you that it was safe to look. The Kiss of Love was supposed to be a protest against moral policing, sparked by a string of violent incidents perpetrated by Kerala’s very own custodians of morality. I have no idea how saying 1, 2, 3 and springing into kissing action, in public, is supposed to safeguard your right to catch the late night movie with friends of the opposite sex, exchange teddy bears on Valentine’s Day, wait for a bus all by yourself especially if you are a woman etc without being afraid of getting beaten up by an angry mob. And my doubts grew stronger as I watched two women kiss (each other) passionately, one eye on the camer

Orotti – Fried Rice Bread from Kerala

Malayalam is an extremely complex language and offers a wide array of expletives, many of which I have been a victim to (my fault, people would say). Even though the language offers a different swear word for each degree of animosity you feel, the most commonly used and loved one is the “Patti”. Patti _for dog. Why would you call your enemy a _patti, isn’t that kind of a compliment? You are inadvertently implying that he is a gentle, loyal and loving fellow (so loving that he drools all over you) and better than most humans you will probably meet in this lifetime. Patti is no insult unless you aim to insult the patti. Paavam.
Orotti is similarly a misplaced insult that people (read, my family) use to describe bread that is tough and cracks a tooth or two. “What is this, some kind of orotti?”, you would say as you flex your muscles to tear apart that bread. I think it has something to do with the name; OROTTI does sound tough. Whereas in reality, it is a delicious, flat bread from Ker
