Oreo Shake

There is an Indo Pak cricket match on Christmas day? God has an odd sense of humor. It reminds me of the days when as a student, I took breaks from school work on festival holidays and looked forward to watching new movies on tv amid the celebrations. But at times, my grand plans were foiled by live cricket telecasts that ALL members of the opposite sex wanted to watch. I can remember only too well the arguments between the cinema loving ladies and the cricket loving guys. Mohanlal or Sachin? A sixer that stuns an entire nation or comedy that has you rolling around laughing uncontrollably? The men usually used their trump card and threatened to leave to my aunt’s house in the neighbourhood to watch the upper cuts and paddle sweeps in peace. The peace loving women angrily gave in but everyone continued looking daggers at each other and it took considerable time (and perhaps a power cut or two) for the climate to turn festive once again.
You are most probably going to face such situatio

Mango And Mint Milk Shake

A few months back: Qya (after returning from school and very excited): Mama, teacher asked me to bring a picture of my favourite fruit to school! Me: OK, so what is your favourite fruit? Qya: Mango! Mama, I want to eat a mango! _Me (surprised, because I couldn’t remember when he ever got to eat a ma

So before you complain about how hot and humid this summer is turning out to be, just take a look around you. To beat the heat, He has given you an abundance of the juiciest and sweetest fruits ever – watermelons, sweet melons, mangoes, pineapples, papaya etc. And a multitude of street vendors to sell you these fruits in whatever form you may fancy 😉 – salads, chaat, juice, smoothies, shakes and so on.
With 92% of it’s weight being water, no fruit can hydrate you better that the watermelon, and is a summer favourite. Ginger Lemonade

Rexy and I had always got along fairly well together. At least, she seemed sincerely pleased to see me every time I visited her, and she is not the kind who can pretend convincingly. So when she warned me to keep away from her babies, I thought she was bluffing. Apparently, she was not, and I ended up getting nipped on my ankle. Ouch!
After the incident, my parents explained that new mother dogs were particularly ferocious. Didn’t I know that? Feeling rather stupid for not having caged Rexy before visiting her pups, I went to the doctor who recommended anti rabies vaccination. Three shots if Rexy remained fit and fine within 10 days of biting me, and five if she should die. I prayed on my knees for her long life because 1) I hate injections. Though these were not painful, they gave me no joy either. 2) The vaccinations were quite expensive, and I could easily think of a number of other things to do with the money, and 3) though Rexy probably thought of me as some kind of monster, I c

Moru/Sambharam – A refreshing and healthy drink

I welcome the occasional power cuts in Bangalore. Any excuse to switch off the TV so that the family can spend some “quality time” together is fine by me. But imagine a time when there was no power at all, the only source of entertainment being an old radio and some periodicals. Hardly a bother when compared to starting the kitchen chores at 4 in the morning, drawing buckets and buckets of water from the well (god bless whoever discovered the motor), grinding and powdering kilos of rice with various kinds of mortars and pestles (my food processor is such a gem), getting all black and sooty while trying to get the firewood to burn (can’t imagine not having a proper gas stove). With none of today’s modern machinery for farming (which was the main occupation of most people in Kerala), the men had a tough time too. The kids were not spared either as they had to walk a long way to their schools, most of them bare footed. To be fair, people did get along fine inspite of all the manual labo

Romance over a Sharjah Shake!!!

Ever since its inception around 15 years back, my college, CEC, has borne witness to a number of love stories. Some of the stories have been told over the years, especially where teachers, eloping or differences in caste was involved. My favourite story was the one in which one of our teachers was supposed to have eloped with a former student of his. This was especially interesting because he was a very strict person, and his mere presence in an otherwise unruly classroom ensured pin drop silence. I could not imagine how anyone had the guts to fall in love with him; surely his ladylove was exceptionally brave.
But not every story ended happily; in fact most of them were not intended to right from the start. There were people who pretended to be “just friends”, which meant that while they did everything that people in love usually did, and had eyes, ears and time for no one else, they claimed they were only two great friends who liked to hang out together. I do not know whether they we
