Mutton Roganjosh – North Indian Lamb Curry

A long time back, when I posted the recipe for pathiri, I was asked why the mutton curry that normally accompanies pathiri was missing. “Mutton is a very expensive meat and way out of the common man’s pocket”, I explained. “Especially out of the stingy and common woman’s pocket”, I thought to mysel

Chocolate Fudge Cake

It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving. – Mother Teresa Truly, there is more happiness in giving than receiving. The joy is in watching your kid’s face light up as he unwraps the gifts left by Santa as a token of appreciation for his good behaviour during the year. It i

Chicken Mughlai

Go to a restaurant with a group of girl friends and you are going to have a really tough time deciding what to order. There will be people who want to stick to the tried and tested stuff, others who are adventurous and want to order the weirdest sounding dishes, yet others who are undecided whether they want soup and dessert and keep changing their minds. Just as difficult is deciding how much to order (with some declaring, “I am SO hungry”), and fitting it in with everyone’s budget (with others declaring, “I am SO broke”). On one occasion that my friends and I decided to treat ourselves at Nelko, a restaurant frequented by most of my college mates, we ordered Mughlai Chicken and roti (after spending a ridiculously long time discussing (read arguing) various options). Not everyone was happy with this decision because Mughlai chicken was something we had never tried before, and was therefore a “risky” choice. And their worst fears were confirmed when the dish was brought in; on the plus

Chicken Roast for this Easter

I do not have concrete belief in the existence of god, but I cannot deny that during stressful times, messages like the one above have given me a gentle push in the right direction. A person who believes in a super hero who has abundant love and compassion for you, who watches over you every minute of the day, holds you close especially when the going is tough, will have the strength to face each day with hope and optimism. So, a person who has unwavering faith in god is a very lucky person, isn’t he?
For this Easter, I am planning to make chicken roast – a whole chicken marinated with spices and baked in its own juices so that the meat is tender, and the skin is crisp and spicy. There is something immensely satisfying about a whole chicken; my little boy just couldn’t seem to wait for it to cook completely. I had to endure gku’s frowns and little qya’s complaints of “vishakunnu” (not to mention growls from my own stomach) while I hurriedly took some pics. Here is the recipe for you be

Semiya Payasam – An Easy to Make Sweet From Kerala

Men in our country are in general male chauvinists. When a woman demands that her husband treat her as an equal, a friend, (with some romance thrown in, ofcourse), would she be asking for too much? Well, if the demand is made of a man with an inflated ego (there would be no need to make such a demand of a reasonable man in the first place), it would definitely be asking for the impossible. But I do wonder if women are not to blame to some extend for this social setup. So many mothers expect their daughters to help with the house work, while their sons are allowed to play, watch TV or do school work. In many homes, parents are willing to dole out plenty of money on a boy child’s education, while that of a girl child is neglected or not given the same importance. Aval padichu collector agumo (Why spend on her education, she is not about to be a collector), would be the appropriate dialogue at this juncture. (Yes, I do watch a lot of Malayalam movies ;)). Yet again, the same mothers sear

Ugly Double Chocolate Strawberry Delight

“There is in every true woman’s heart, a spark of heavenly fire, which lies dormant in the broad daylight of prosperity, but which kindles up and beams and blazes in the dark hour of adversity.”
I believe that a woman, a regular middle class woman, shoulders a lot more responsibility than her male counterpart. And she shoulders it really well, in a way that no man is capable of. I believe that behind the success of every person, there is a woman, who gave selflessly and without limits and that it is important to show these women your appreciation once in a while. Though women have proved themselves over and over again, so many people in our country think that they are not entitled to the same rights and freedom as men. Unfortunate !
I am glad that god chose me to be a woman, and fortunately, I was given equal opportunities as my brother. (Though I may not have utilized these opportunities as well as he did). Anyhow, I think the occasion calls for a celebration, and what better way to c

Crazy Love and a Chocolate Cheese Cake !!!

I heard an anecdote that got me pondering about love and the games it plays on its innocent victims.
” A psychiatrist visits his patients at a mental institution he newly joined, while his nurse gives him a brief overview about each patient.
Room 1 is occupied by a man, staring out of the window with a sad and faraway look in his eyes. He repeatedly says Priya, as if it were a mantra that tethers him to life. The nurse explains that Priya was his lover, but he was unable to marry her, and this made him incurably crazy.
Room 2 is occupied by a man who is as violent as a mad man could possibly be. The doctor sees him throw things around, yell and shout, and tear at his hair in anguish. The nurse explains, “Now this man here got married to Priya”. ”
I do not know where you belong, but if you are in love, you are bound to find yourself in one of the rooms soon enough (even if it is only for short periods of time). On this happy and optimistic note, let me share the recipe of the chocolate
